Position OverviewThe Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences at Massey University, Palmerston North, invites applications for the position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Dairy Cattle Health and Production or Practicing Veterinarian/Professional Clinician/Senior Practicing Veterinarian/Professional Clinician in Dairy Cattle Health and Production.
The position is ideally suited to an ambitious dairy cattle veterinarian who wishes to develop their career in in dairy cattle health and production . You will participate in teaching via lectures and practical sessions in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and on-farm visits.
This position will provide you with an unique opportunity to develop your career under the guidance of veterinary and animal scientists with world class expertise in pastoral animal health, preventative medicine, pastoral nutrition, information systems, theriogenology and epidemiology. It would provide you with the opportunity to attain a higher degree or prepare for specialist qualifications.
This position is available on either the academic or clinical track and will be dependent on the skills & qualifications of the succesful applicant.
You must hold a veterinary degree registrable in New Zealand and have some clinical experience.

Position description 
Purpose Statement Teach dairy cattle health (individual animal),whole farm health and production, and preventative medicine to undergraduate students .
Provide primary accession and whole farm health and production services for clients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and on referral to other veterinarians.
Contribute to the academic functions of the Institute by facilitating and engaging personally in research and scholarship in individual animal and or whole herd dairy health , production and preventative medicine
Responsible toThe Institute Head through leader of the Dairy Systems Management Group, for academic matters, and through the Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, for clinical services.
Key Accountability AreasKey Accountability Areas (Academic Track):
1. Develop and provide programmes of instruction in individual animal and whole farm health and production services for students in diploma and degree programmes, including the preparation and presentation of lectures, laboratory sessions, seminars, tutorials and clinical (on-farm) instruction in dairy cattle health.
2. Develop the content, presentation and scope of subjects to be taught in whole farm health and production services and individual animal medicine and husbandry; including undertaking such lead academic roles as paper coordination.
3. Contribute actively to the advanced academic functions of the Institute by engaging in research in dairy whole herd health, individual animal medicine and/or husbandry/ management, including:
* devising and leading research projects (including clinical or 'bench' research)
* seeking funds and other resources to conduct research projects
* engaging in collaborative research ventures as appropriate
* encouraging and supervising postgraduate student research as appropriate
* presenting research findings at meetings
* preparing and publishing research findings in refereed journals
* conducting other research-related activities as appropriate
4. Provide clinical services in dairy herd and individual animal health as a veterinarian in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Key Accountability Areas (Clinical Track):
1. Provide instruction in dairy cattle health (individual animal),whole farm health and production, and preventative medicine for students in diploma and degree programmes through your role as a veterinarian in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, , including the preparation and presentation of lectures, laboratory sessions, seminars, tutorials and clinical (on-farm) teaching.
2. Servicing dairy cattle farming clients as required.
3. Help to develop the content, presentation and scope of subjects to be taught in dairy cattle health (individual animal),whole farm health and production, and preventative medicine
4. Contribute to the advanced academic functions of the Institute by:
* assisting academic staff with their research. You will not be required to take a lead role in research and will undertake these duties under the guidance of a principal investigator.
* supporting the advancement of the veterinary profession through collaborating in the publication of case reports, reviews, retrospective and prospective studies based upon the clinical cases under your care in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
* presenting clinical observations at veterinary continuing professional development meetings.
ALL APPOINTMENTS (ACADEMIC AND CLINICAL TRACKS):
1. Participation in the after-hours "on-call" roster.
2. Act to minimise threats to health and safety of staff and students.
3. Ensuring that all her/his teaching, research and other activities which involve
the use of animals of their tissues are conducted according to the law and
conform with the requirements of the Massey University Code of Ethical
Conduct for the use of Live Animals for Teaching and Research.
4. Contributing to meeting the administrative needs of the University, internally
and externally, by participating in Institute, College and University functions as
carried out by Boards, Committees, working parties, groups and offices as may be required or approved from time to time by the Institute Head.
5. Promoting University academic and professional interests by serving
government community, professional, educational or other organisations in
external capacities which utilise and promulgate specialist academic and
technical knowledge, skills and other expertise, as approved from time to time
by the Institute Head.
6. Contributing to continuing education and professional development for
veterinarians.
7. Other reasonable duties as specified by the Institute Head.
Selection criteria 
QualificationsA veterinary degree registrable in New Zealand is essential.
A higher degree, post-graduate clinical qualification, or clinical specialisation. For an academic track appointment ,a PhD is preferable, but not essential; however, an appointee without a PhD will be expected to register for this qualification upon appointment.
ExperienceExperience in the provision of clinical services, whole farm health and production programmes to farming clients
Experience of New Zealand pastoral production systems.
Experience in teaching and research or scholarship.
Attributes and SkillsThe ability to work as part of a team is essential
Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role
